Regular calibration of EC meters is essential. If EC meters are not reading correctly the grower is misinformed as to the concentration of the nutrient solution that could have harmful effects on the plants in the system.
This standard is 1.1413mS / cm and meters that are calibrated in milliSeimens must be calibrated to this level. For meters that read in parts per million (ppm) things are a bit more complicated. All EC meters measure EC in mS / cm. Meters that have a data reading in ppm have electronically converted mS to ppm. The problem is that different manufacturers convert mS to ppm in different ways.

1 ms = 500 ppm meters: 1.1413 ms = 570.65 ppm
1 ms = 666 ppm: 1.1413 ms = 760.1058 ppm
1 ms = 700 ppm: 1.1413 ms = 798.91 ppm
Some meters like the shiny Bluelab meters don't need to be calibrated, but it's still good to check that the CE is still reading correctly. With these meters an incorrect reading is generally due to low batteries or cleaning the probe may CE.
Pour as much CE standard in what is necessary to cover the electrodes.
